WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University men's soccer team lost 5-2 on Tuesday night at Hotchkiss Field to Potomac State College from West Virginia. The Catamounts (1-0) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and didn't look back against the Bison (1-1). Gallaudet scored its first two goals of the 2010 season in the loss.
Last year, GU only scored two goals in a game once on October 2, 2009, in a 9-2 loss to Washington Adventist University. In fact, it took the Bison the first seven games to record two goals while this season it only took two games.
Junior defender Jacob Schlotthauer (Oshkosh, Wis.) scored his first goal of the season in the 37th minute of the first half to cut the Potomac State lead to one, 2-1. The Catamounts outshot the Bison 7-5 in the opening half.
In the second half, Potomac State scored three unanswered goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Freshman forward Riccardo Murphy led the Catamounts with two goals and one assist.
Gallaudet freshman forward Abdul Al-Makura (Bassa, Nigeria) scored his first collegiate goal with a minute left to play to close out the scoring in the game.
GU junior goalie Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana) ended the game with five saves while his counterpart Mike Lamb stopped two.
Potomac State, a junior college, held a 15-7 advantage in shots while GU took one more corner kick, 6-5, then the Catamounts.
Gallaudet will next make the short trip up to Takoma Park, Md., on Friday, September 10, to face Division II foe Washington Adventist University at 3 p.m.
