GU takes first lead of the season but cant fend off Southern Virginia
BUENA VISTA, Va. – For the first time in the 2010 season the Gallaudet University men's soccer team gained the lead and held an advantage over its opponent for nearly 30 minutes. The Bison trailed 2-1 at the half as it allowed Southern Virginia University to score five consecutive goals en route to a 5-1 loss on the road Saturday.
Southern Virginia senior defender Chris Teerlink scored a hat trick to pace the Knights as they improved their record to 4-1. SVU is off to its best start in program history.
Gallaudet freshman forward Abdul Al-Makura (Bassa, Nigeria) scored the game's first goal 11 minutes in off an assist from sophomore forward James Rummo (Butler, N.J.). Al-Makura's shot was the first of the game for GU. Al-Makura leads the Bison with two goals this season.
The GU lead stood until the 29th minute when Teerlink netted his first goal of the day. Teerlink added his second 11 minutes later as SVU took the lead for good. The teams went into half with the Knights leading by one.
Teerlink completed his hat trick nine minutes into the second half as he beat Gallaudet junior goalie Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana). Qobose (eight saves) allowed a fourth goal in the 74th minute as SVU's Brady Johnson scored off a Teerlink assist. Minutes later Qobose was pulled in favor of freshman goalie Jordan Ramser (Louisville, Ky.).
The Knights greeted Ramser to the game with a fifth and final goal. Brandon Seeberger scored the game's final goal with an unassisted tally with 10 minutes to play.
SVU outshot Gallaudet 26-2 as the Knights defense held the Bison to no shots in the second half.
Gallaudet coach Luis Gendive's last appearance against Southern Virginia University came in 2006. That game was the last victory the Bison program celebrated. GU defeated SVU 1-0 on October 21, 2006. That was the last season Gendive coached the Bison until he returned to the sidelines this year. During that span the Bison have not won a game in 57 tries.
The Bison will next make their North Eastern Athletic Conference debut on Saturday, September 18, at 6 p.m. against Penn St.-Harrisburg at Hotchkiss Field.
