GANSEVOORT, NY - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week selections for Jan. 23, and Gallaudet University senior James McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.) was named NEAC Men’s Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week after a dominant performance last Saturday at the Field House pool.
During the season home finale against Hood College, McGowan and his 200-yard medley relay teammates, DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.), Dan Burton (Waukesha, Wis.) and Sean Ryant (Cleveland, Ohio), posted a first-place finish and set a new school record time of 1:48:37. The new record broke the old mark of 1:49.52 set in 2008 by more than a second. Consequently, McGowan was also a member of the 2008 record setting relay team as a freshman. Although he also placed second in both the 50 freestyle (23.61 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (52.59), Gallaudet eventually lost the dual meet 113-92 on Senior Day.
McGowan has had an impressive four-year career for the Bison. He currently holds three individual school records and has been a member of four of the five record-setting relay teams.
This is the senior’s first NEAC Men’s Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week award and the fifth for Gallaudet this season. Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.), last season’s NEAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year, has been recognized three separate times this season, and Everton-Lovell was honored on Dec. 5, 2011.
Gallaudet men’s swimming team will next be at the NEAC championships Feb. 17-19 at Cazenovia College in an effort to repeat as NEAC champions.
