Bison relay team edges Penn State-Altoona as GU drops double dual meet

YORK, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's swimming team dove back into the pool on Saturday in a double dual meet on the road against Penn State-Altoona and Capital Athletic Conference foe and host York (Pa.) College. The Bison swam its best meet to date as the Buff and Blue held an early lead against Penn State-Altoona before they fell 128-70. It was the closes defeat for Gallaudet this season. York swam away from Gallaudet as the Spartans won 174-29.

Gallaudet drops to 0-6 for the season and 0-4 in the conference.

The highlight for the Bison came in the final race of the day as Gallaudet edged out Penn State-Altoona in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Gallaudet's team of sophomore Kyle Sexton (Peoria, Ill.), freshman Kailob Miller (Ardmore, Okla.), freshman Mike Atwood (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and freshman Dan Burton (Waukesha, Wis.) finished with a time of 1:45.64. The Lions were right on the Bison heels as Penn State-Altoona's team touched the wall with a time of 1:45.73. For the Bison the race came down to the anchor, Burton. The freshman sliced through the last half lap, without a breath, to pull out the win for the Buff and Blue.

"Burton is a gamer! He has been practicing hard this season and he found the strength to finish fast," said Gallaudet coach Bill Snape. "That is what Gallaudet swimming is all about. That is what swimming is about."

GU is now off until mid-January when the Bison will finish out the second half of their 2009-10 schedule and continue to prepare for the CAC championships in February.
