Weather Breaks for Sea Gull Opener

Salisbury, MD--The Gallaudet track and field team traveled to Salisbury, Maryland for the Sea Gull Opener.  The temperature was in stark contrast to last weekend's meet in Rockville, with temperatures in the mid 70's and an endless amount of sunshine.  The Bison tried to take advantage of this break in the weather to improve upon their efforts of only a week prior, as nearly everyone on the team finished with a season best performance.

The Bison women opened the meet with a strong message as senior Kari Olney captured the first running event of the day, the 3000m Steeplechase, in a time of 13:16.0.  Olney's victory helped lead the Bison women, who placed in seven events over the course of the day.  Kari also placed 5th in both the 800m run and javelin.

Newcomer Rose Ritz ran well in her first competition of the year, placing 2nd in the 800m run with a time of 2:32.4.  First-year Erin Phillips has another outstanding meet as she placed in all three of her events for the day; 5th in the 100m dash, 6th in both long jump and triple jump.

Gallaudet veteran Anthony Baskin competed in his first meet of the year after helping the Bison basketball team to o ne of its best finishes in recent history.  Baskin wasted no time in placing 4th in the 110m high hurdles and 5th in both the long jump and triple jump. Senior Matt Schindel added 10 feet to last week's best throw to finish 5th with a throw of 42.69m (140-0).

Gallaudet track and field will next compete at the Battleground Relays held in Fredericksburg, Virginia on March 27-28.
