Gallaudet men's volleyball club makes its debut at SUNYIT

UTICA, N.Y. – A new chapter officially began on Saturday when the Gallaudet University men's volleyball club team took to the court on the campus of SUNYIT. The Bison lost their two matches in straight sets but those outcomes don't overshadow the important day in the program's history.

Gallaudet lost to Bard College 4-25, 12-25, 14-25 before it lost to Lancaster Bible College 10-25, 16-25, 14-25. The Bison kept no team or individual statistics for either match.

GU will turn around and play Elms College and the host Wildcats from SUNYIT on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively.

The Bison, under the direction of Head Coach Emma Racila, are competing as a club team this season before they will be evaluated to determine if they should be elevated to varsity status for next season. Currently, there are three members of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) that sponsor men's volleyball; they include Lancaster Bible College, SUNYIT and Wells.

This is not the first time Gallaudet fielded a men's volleyball team as the Bison had a championship caliber program back in the 1970's when they won four straight Potomac Intercollegiate Conference championships (1974-77). In 1975, the Bison were a participant in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament. Hall of Famer Robert Jackson founded GU's men's volleyball program in 1973. He led the Bison to five straight winning seasons after the pilot season.
