Gallaudet places sixth at Penn St.-Abington Invitational, two freshmen finish in Top 13
HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. – Two Gallaudet University men’s cross country runners got their first taste of running in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) at the Penn St.-Abington Invitational at Lorimer Park on Saturday. If today’s results repeat or improve at the conference championships then Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.) have a strong chance to earn all-conference honors.
Close and Alfaro ran a smart race on the same course that will host the conference championships at the end of October. Close finished eighth overall as he completed the 8K course in 31 minutes, 28 seconds. Alfaro was a minute behind in 13th place (32:24).
Gallaudet finished sixth overall as a team with 146 points out of nine teams. The Bison finished ahead of Penn St.-Harrisburg (167 points), Lancaster Bible College (177) and Valley Forge Christian College (242). SUNYIT won the race with 36 points as four of their top five runners finished in the top nine spots. Morrisville State finished second overall with 58 points followed by Penn St.-Abington (74), Penn St.-Berks (107) and Keuka College (138).
Freshman John Horton (Vancouver, British Columbia) was the third Bison to finish the race as he placed 36th overall (36:54) and six spots behind was sophomore Chris Davis (Stillwater, Okla.) in 42nd place (37:24). James Glenn (Wichita, Kan.) was the fifth runner for GU as he crossed the finish line in 39 minutes, 52 seconds in 53rd place. Freshman Neal Matthews (Kent Island, Md.) was 63rd (44:28) and junior Evan Saltz (Coconut Creek, Fla.) was 70th (53:08).
Gallaudet will not race next weekend but will return on Saturday, Sept. 29, when the Bison travel to Neville, Pa., to participate in the Dickinson Long/Short Course Invitational at Big Spring High School.
