WESTMINSTER, Md. – On a clear Saturday morning the Gallaudet University men’s cross country team lined up to participate in the Green Terror Invitational on the campus of McDaniel College and in the end finished fifth overall out of five teams.
Gallaudet was paced by freshmen Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.) and sophomore Chris Davis (Stillwater, Okla.). The trio placed 19th, 22nd and 24th overall on the hilly course. Sophomore James Glenn (Wichita, Kan.) and freshman John Horton (Vancouver, British Columbia) were the next two Bison runners to finish to help earn team points for the buff and blue. Glenn placed 27th overall with a time of 20 minutes, 58 seconds while Horton was two spots back (22:17). Junior Felix Ramirez (Anaheim, Calif.) and freshman Neal Matthews (Kent Island, Md.) were the other Gallaudet runners to finish the 5K race. Ramirez checked in 31st overall (24:46) followed by Matthews in 33rd place (25:44).
The Naval Academy won the team competition with 13 points as its top five runners finished in the top seven spots. Hagerstown Junior College was tied for second place with Seton Hill with 36 points followed by the host Green Terror from McDaniel (73 points) and the Bison. Justin Maguire from the Naval Academy won in 16:45 as he edged out his teammate Andrew Anderson by a second.
Close was the top Bison in the 3K race, which followed the women’s 5K race, as he finished 16th overall with a time of 10 minutes, 48 seconds. Alfaro placed 18th (10:59) while Davis placed 24th (11:33). Seton Hill’s Jon Bogert won the shorten race in 9:38.
Gallaudet will next participate in the Penn St.-Abington Invitational at Lorimer Park, Pa., on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 9 a.m.
