NEWVILLE, Pa. – Freshmen Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.) were Gallaudet University’s lone men’s cross country representatives sent to compete at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional championship on Saturday at Big Spring High School hosted by Dickinson College.
Close, a second team all-conference runner, finished in 140th place out of 343 runners as he finished the 8K course in 28 minutes, 13 seconds. Alfaro finished in 257th place with a time of 30 minutes, 17 seconds.
Allegheny College junior Bobby Over won the race as he cruised to the finish in 25 minutes, nine seconds. Haverford College won the team championship with 63 points as it had three runners finish in the Top 10. Carnegie Mellon was second in the team standings with 92 points. The top two teams receive automatic bids to the NCAA national championships next weekend. Gallaudet did not receive any team points since it only had two runners finish the race. A team needs five runners to finish the race to be considered for the team standings.
Close and Alfaro are the first two men’s cross country runners to appear in a NCAA regional race under the tutelage of second-year head coach Mikaela Hudson.
“I am extremely proud of all of our runners today who competed at the NCAA regional championships. They were all focused, raced hard and set personal records,” said Hudson. “I could not have asked for a more committed team. We have raised the bar for Gallaudet cross country. We are already looking forward to next season and improving on this season’s success.”
