BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.) was Gallaudet University's sole men's cross country representative sent to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional championship on Saturday at Lehigh University hosted by Muhlenberg College.
Alfaro, the Bison's top runner this season, finished 237th place out of 365 runners and he completed the 8K course in 28 minutes, 55 seconds. This marks a major career personal record for Alfaro as he shaved 43 seconds off of his previous best time of 29:38. Alfaro greatly improved over his performance in the 2012 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional championship where he finished 257th with a time of 30 minutes, 17 seconds.
Allegheny College senior Bobby Over won the race for the second consecutive year as he crossed the finish line in just 24 minutes, 29 seconds. Johns Hopkins took home the top spot in the team championship with 62 points after three Blue Jays finished in the Top 10. Dickinson placed second in the team standings with 88 points. The top two teams receive automatic bids to the NCAA national championships next weekend. Gallaudet did not receive any team points since it only had one runner finish the race. A team needs five runners to finish the race to be considered for the team standings.
This is the second straight year Alfaro has traveled to participate in an NCAA regional race under head coach Mikaela Gardner.
"Our goal coming into this championship race was to run sub 29 minutes. We structured rest into our last two weeks of the season to make sure his legs were fresh going into the race," said Gardner. "This is a major personal record for Ivan and I'm proud of his performance in the race."
