MARCY, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to New York for the 7th annual SUNYIT Wildcat Weekend Classic on Saturday. The men’s team competed against 18 teams on a challenging 8K course and finished 12th overall. The women’s team placed 15th out of 17 teams on the 5K course.
Gallaudet sophomore Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.) continues to demonstrate his strength and leadership on the race course as he finished first for the Bison. He placed 49th out of a field of 164 runners with a time of 30 minutes, 40 seconds. The next Bison to finish was freshman Michael Clark (Portland, Ore.) in 61st place (31:25). Less than a minute behind was junior Chris Davis (Stillwater, Okla.) in 74th place (32:08). Juniors Braden Forbes (DeLand, Fla.) and Gabriel Carino (Bronx, N.Y.) were next to cross the finish line in 108th (34:01) and 119th (35:37) place, respectively, making up the top five runners for Gallaudet and contributing to the team’s overall 12th place finish. Sophomore Neal Matthews (Kent Island, Md.) clocked in at 37:33 landing him in 134th place. Sophomore Brian Llanes (Miami, Fla.) completed the race 10 spots later in 144th (39:39). Sophomores Seth Adkison (College Station, Texas) and Andrew Ferguson (White Oak, Md.) completed the race 161st (45:20) and 163rd (47:56), respectively. SUNYIT sophomore Derek Struck won the meet with a record setting time of 26:37. Kane Seamon of Cobleskill College held the previous record with a time of 27:40 in 2009.
Seven runners represented the Gallaudet women’s team at the invitational. Junior Crystal Padilla (Riverside, Calif.) ran the fastest time for the Bison (24:34), which landed her in 68th place out of 137 runners. Shortly after, junior Rachel Young (Leesburg, Va.) finished in 72nd place with a time of 24:56. Senior Radoslava Slavova (Scranton, Pa.) crossed the finish line next placing 93rd (26:11) followed by freshman Allison Tyeryar (Walkersville, Md) in 100th (26:53). The next Bison to complete the course was senior Roberta Dunlap (West Valley, Utah), who crossed the line with a time of 31:01. She was the fifth and final runner to put points toward the Bison 15th place team finish. Sophomore Elizabeth Reza (Jefferson, Ga.) placed 132nd and recorded a time of 33:30. Junior Emily Middlebrook of Wells College led all runners and won the race with a time of 20:11.
SUNY ESF College swept both sides of the team competition. The men’s team placed five players in the top 10 and totaled a mere 34 points. The women’s team had five runners in the top 20 and compiled 75 points.
The Gallaudet men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News, Va., on Oct. 12, for the CNU Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
