NEWVILLE, Pa. – Gallaudet University was represented by four student-athletes at the 2014 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Cross Country meet Saturday at Big Spring High School hosted by Dickinson College.
Sophomore Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and freshman Dylan Rich (Brockton, Mass.) were the two Bison from the men's team to compete in the 8K race. The pair have consistently been the first Bison to cross the finish line all season. This is the second time Close has participated in a regional meet; both times hosted by Dickinson. During his freshman year (2012), Close finished in 140th place out of 343 runners with a personal best of 28 minutes, 13 seconds.
This year Close finished the race in 28:57.2 in 211th place out of 343 runners while Rich finished in 264th place with a time of 30:13.9. The first-place runner was Haverford College junior Charlie Marquardt with a time of 24:57.4. Carnegie Mellon University's men's team won the race with a team total of 90 points.
Seniors Rachel Young (Leesburg, Va.) and Lindsey Corthell (Orlando, Fla.) represented Gallaudet women's cross country team in the 6K race. This was both student-athletes' first appearance in the NCAA Division III regional meet. Corthell finished 240th out of 370 runners (26:38.1) while Young, who battled an injury in the last mile, finished in 342nd place (29:37.7).
John's Hopkins University won the women's race with a total of 28 points. The Blue Jays had four runners finish in the top 10, snagging both first and second place in the meet. Junior Sophia Meehan was the first female runner to cross the finish line at 21:18.0 followed by teammate Bridget Gottlieb (21:54.0).
This ends both Young's and Corthell's careers for the Bison and brings to a close the first season for head coach Byron Moore.
