FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball
team swept a doubleheader from Gallaudet University on Wednesday at
the Battleground, winning both games in five innings by 8-0 scores.
In the opener, sophomore Kirsten Rowell threw a no hitter, striking
out nine in five innings, with no walks. Kallie Williams, the lone
Gallaudet runner to reach base, reached on an error.
In game one, the Eagles scored two runs in the first inning, two in
the third, and four in the fourth. Junior Kerri Spaulding went 3-3
with three runs scored, and scored the eighth run with a steal of
home. Cathy Hull went 1-1 with two runs scored and an RBI, and
Jamie Clevenger tripled for UMW.
In the nightcap, The Eagles scored five runs in the first, one in
the third, and two in the fifth. Emily Peisach, Catherine Bundrick,
and Jamie Clevenger each had three hits for UMW, with Bundrick
driving in three runs. Hull went 2-2 with three RBI. Katherine
Matusik allowed just two hits in five innings for UMW,walking none
and striking out six.
Gallaudet returns to action over the weekend as the Bison play host
to Salem and Chatham Colleges as part of the Gallaudet Invitational
Tournament.
