STAUNTON, Va. – The Gallaudet University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Mary Baldwin College on Thursday afternoon at Squirrel Field. In game one the Bison couldn't muster enough offense and fell to the Fighting Squirrels, 5-1. Gallaudet was outmatched again in game two as Mary Baldwin pitcher Jessica Hogle held the Bison in check en route to a 16-2 win in five innings.
Gallaudet (0-14) squandered early opportunities as it left five runners on base over in the first two innings. Mary Baldwin (5-14) took advantage of its opportunities and took a 5-0 lead after two innings. Gallaudet got it's only run of the game when freshman Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) scored on a RBI-single by junior outfielder Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) in the seventh inning.
Freshman pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) settled down after the first two innings and did not allow another run to cross. Murphy (0-8) finished the game with two strikeouts and allowed six hits. Amanda Miller (1-6) picked up the win for the Fighting Squirrels.
The sensational pitching of Hogle (4-7) in the second game shut down the Bison. Hogle struck out seven Gallaudet batters and walked five. Weiss and Johnson both scored on a throwing error by Mary Baldwin in the fourth inning. Sophomore Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) suffered the loss in the second game as she allowed nine runs (six earned) on nine hits, walked three and struck out one.
Senior outfielder Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) had a good day at the plate as she went 2-for-4 in game one and stole a base in the second game. Junior third baseman Leeza Cantu (Selma, Calif.) went a perfect 2-for-2 in game one and was credited with two RBI in the second game.
Gallaudet is slated to host Trinity (D.C.) University on Saturday, March 24, at noon for a doubleheader, weather permitting. Stay tuned to the Gallaudet Athletics website for updates of these games.
