Bison win their last home game of the season, split against Penn St.-Harrisburg
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University softball team finished out its home schedule on Sunday with a split against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponent Penn St.-Harrisburg before a nice crowd at the GU Softball Complex. After falling in the first game 8-0 in five innings, the Bison outlasted the Nittany Lions 4-1 on Senior Day. Senior outfielder Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.), senior first baseman Jessica Buckwalter (Palmyra, Mo.) and Leeza Cantu (Selma, Calif.) all closed out their home playing careers with a win.
Gallaudet (6-24, 4-10 NEAC South) was held in check in the first game as it only mustered one hit in five innings. Cantu was the only Gallaudet batter to register a hit with a single to right field in the second inning. The Bison loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning but were unable to capitalize as all three runners were left on base.
Kara Boyd (2-7) picked up the win for Penn St-Harrisburg (6-16, 10-4 NEAC South). Boyd struck out eight batters and walked only one. Boyd also led the Nittany Lions at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI while going 2-for-4 in game one. Kristyan Gates sealed the game shut with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Montana Murphy
(Simi Valley, Calif.) took the loss for the Bison. Murphy (1-11) struck out three and surrendered one walk in five innings of work.
The second game was tied at one until freshman second baseman Mia Fernandez (Artesia, N.M.) doubled in the fourth inning to bring in junior outfielder Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.). Junior shortstop Nicole O'Malley (Fredericksburg, Va.) opened the lead up with a two-run double later in the inning.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Sweigart
(Big Rock, Ill.) closed out the last home game of the season with a gem in the circle. Sweigart (5-8) struck out two and surrendered only four hits in seven innings of work. She also had plenty of help from her defense as O'Malley played a part in 10 of the 21 total put outs.
Brittany Kringer (5-6) took the loss for the Nittany Lions. Kringer finished with three strikeouts and one walk. Breanna Green scored the only run of the game after being walked and later scored on an error.
The Bison only have six more regular-season NEAC games before the conference tournament gets underway on April 28. Gallaudet travels to Wilson College (17-2, 12-0), first place in the NEAC South Division, on Wednesday, April 18, for two games at 3 p.m.
