Interim Athletic Director Mike Weinstock announced today the
selection of Kevin Cook as the new Women's Basketball Head
Coach/Program Coordinator. "Today is G-Day, meaning a Great
Day for Gallaudet Athletics! I'm excited to have Kevin join our
coaches and also look forward to the experience he brings to our
growing pool of talent!" Weinstock commented.
Kevin Cook comes to Gallaudet after ten years as an assistant
coach with the WNBA Houston Comets. In 2006, Kevin was named the
head coach of the Nigerian National Team that competed in the 2006
World Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“Coach Kevin” served on the winning Western conference all-star staff in the first three WNBA All-Star games as well as touring Brazil as coach with the WNBA All-Stars in 1998. Prior to his stint with the Comets, Cook served two years as head coach at Garden City College, including a 20-win season plus a #12 national ranking. Kevin also has ten years’ experience at the college level with the University of Kansas, participating in 4 conference championships and a number of NCAA tournaments.
In 2001, Cook coached a traveling team that played against Division-I institutions in preseason exhibition games. His team went 10-1 including victories over Rutgers, Maryland, West Virginia and current National Champion University of Connecticut.
Cook’s experience also includes co-authoring a basketball book with the first female Harlem Globetrotter, Lynette Woodard, and had a small role in the movie Cottonmouth. He has done TV and Radio commentary for NCAA women’s basketball games and speaks regularly for civic groups and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Cook will begin his duties at Gallaudet on October 9th due to overseas coaching commitments.
