Bison work hard at St. Joseph's Tournament

The Gallaudet Women's Basketball Team traveled to St. Joseph's College in West Hartford, Connecticut for a pair of matchups against the host and College of Staten Island. In the road season opener, the Bison fell to St. Joseph's, 54-40. The Buff and Blue also dropped the second game to Staten Island, 98-68.

Against St. Joseph's on Friday night, freshman Nukeitra Hayes jumped out front for the Bison with her first collegiate double-double, also in her first career start. The freshman posted 14 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals in 30 minutes of floor time. She also went 4-4 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore veteran Brittainy Payne who finished in the 2006-07 conference top-10 in rebounds and blocks, had 9 rebounds, 2 assists, a block and a steal along with 2 points. Junior Kari Olney netted 7 points, as did Victoria Crockett. Crockett also added 6 boards.

In Saturday's matchup against Staten Island, Hayes once again followed her opening act with another double-double, posting 23 points off 10-for-12 field goals, 11 boards as well as a block.  Payne narrowly missed her first double-double of this season with 11 boards and 9 points. Junior point guard Priscilla Biskupiak had 9 points, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.

The Buff and Blue shot 45% from the field, and won the second half against Staten Island 45-44. Gallaudet also won the battle of the boards, 50-32. Staten Island capitalized on the Bison's 37 turnovers to take the game.

Nukeitra Hayes' combined 37 points and 21 rebounds earned her an All-Tournament Team selection.

Gallaudet (0-2, 0-0 CAC) has the week off as they will take on Meredith College Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. in the Field House as part of the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament.
