WASHINGTON,DC--Bison Head Coach Kevin Cook notched his first
career victory at the Field House with a 61-54 score over the John
Jay College Bloodhounds.
Both offenses struggled to ignite in the opening minutes until
John Jay built a slim lead, capitalizing on Bison turnovers.
However, Gallaudet came back to tie the game off a Vanessa Arp
jumper. This half would see seven lead changes before Gallaudet got
on top off a Nukeitra Hayes steal. Brittainy Payne made the layup
off the steal to put the Bison up 32-30 with two seconds remaining.
Payne also drew a foul on the play and drained the ensuing free
throw to give the Buff and Blue a three-point lead going into the
half.
Gallaudet shot 77% from the charity stripe compared to John Jay's
71% in the first half. The Bison also shot 50% from the field
against the Bloodhounds' 39%.
The second half the Bison build a six point lead that they would
not relinquish. Gallaudet shot 33% from the field, and 66% from the
charity stripe to take the game.
The Bloodhounds were led by all-tournament team pick Parker
Griffin's 22 point, 9 rebound effort. Guard Ganimete Ukperaj had 20
points and went 9-11 at the free throw line.
Gallaudet's offense was led by four players scoring in double
digits: Nukeitra Hayes and Brittainy Payne each had 15, while Kari
Olney had 14 and Priscilla Biskupiak had 11 with 6 assists. Payne
recorded her first double-double of 2007, adding 13 rebounds while
Hayes pulled down 7.
