Bison women's basketball players lead Team USA to gold, Stergio named MVP

TAOYUAN, TAIWAN – Current and former members of the Gallaudet University women's basketball program led Team USA to the 2015 World Deaf Basketball Championships gold medal as they defeated Lithuania, 68-54.

Former Bison standout Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) was named the tournament MVP as she averaged 10.9 points per game in seven games.

Members of Team USA who are current students at Gallaudet include rising seniors Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.), Claire Tucker (Middletown, Md.), rising junior Juliana Apfel (Tucson, Ariz.) and rising sophomore Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.). In addition to Stergio, Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) were members of Team USA and Gallaudet graduates. Several other members of Team USA attend other universities in the United States. Former Gallaudet Bison student-athlete Lani Murashige served as an assistant coach on the team.

Team USA went undefeated in group play with wins over Ukraine (57-47), Japan (95-38), Turkey (89-26) and Italy (69-39). In the knockout stages, Team USA defeated Chinese Taipei (84-19) and then took down Greece, 76-37, in the semifinals. Team USA finished with a perfect 7-0 record.
