Gallaudet set to host NEAC Basketball Tournament Quarterfinal Doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 23

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University is proud to announce that both men's and women's basketball programs will host two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) playoff games on Tuesday night (Feb. 23) at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively, in the Field House.

The GU athletics department invites the campus community to come out and show its Buff and Blue spirit by packing the Field House and cheering on the Bison in both NEAC tournament quarterfinal games.

Gallaudet men's basketball (17-7, 14-4 NEAC) completed their first regular season under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Kovacs, which was a huge success. The Bison completed the 2015-16 regular season with NEAC's stingiest scoring defense (68.5 points per game) and will head into the game against Penn St. Berks (8-16, 8-10 NEAC) on a two-game winning streak.

Following the completion of the men's game, the GU women's basketball team (14-11, 13-7 NEAC) will host Bryn Athyn College (15-10, 13-7 NEAC). The women's program under the tutelage of fourth-year head coach Stephanie Stevens also heads into this postseason game on a two-game winning streak and leads the NEAC in turnovers forced (13.1 steals and 2.4 blocked shots per game).

Men's Preview: Gallaudet vs. Penn St.-Berks, 6 p.m.

GU has played Penn St.-Berks twice this season, winning both matchups, one coming on the road on Jan. 29 (107-79) and one at home on Feb. 20 (82-59).

In the first game, senior Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) led the Bison attack with 29 points, five rebounds as juniors Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) and Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) added 16 and 12 points, respectively. Nelson also led the team in assists (seven) and steals (four) while McGriff had 14 rebounds.

In the second game, Nelson led the team with 17 points along with five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Gordon, McGriff and senior Todd Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) chipped in 15 points apiece and combined for 23 rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks.

This is GU's second straight season hosting a quarterfinal game. GU lost to Penn St.-Abington, 76-73, last season. Gallaudet has not advanced to the NEAC semifinals since the 2010-11 season.

The winner will advance to this weekend's NEAC Final Four being hosted by Lancaster Bible College and will play Morrisville State College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Women's Preview: Gallaudet vs. Bryn Athyn, 8 p.m.

GU has played Bryn Athyn twice this season, splitting the series 1-1, as the home team has won each game. The Bison lost at Bryn Athyn, 55-43, on Jan. 7 and won 73-57 on Feb. 16 in the Field House.

In the first game, senior guard Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) led Gallaudet with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven steals while senior forward Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.) added eight points and 10 rebounds.

In the second game, Gage paced the Bison with 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Morris had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore guard Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) contributed 23 points and seven rebounds in the home victory.

This is Gallaudet's third straight season in the NEAC tournament and the second time in three years it has hosted a NEAC quarterfinal game. Gallaudet last advanced to the NEAC semifinals in the 2013-14 season.

The winner will advance to this weekend's NEAC Final Four being hosted by Lancaster Bible College and play either SUNY Poly or Penn St.-Abington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
