GU wrestling places 12th at Doug Cherry Invitational

EASTON, Pa. - The Gallaudet University wrestling club finished 12th out of 16 teams at the 13th Annual Doug Cherry Invitational Wrestling Tournament co-hosted by Lafayette College and Northampton Community College last Saturday at the APK Sports Center and Kamine Gymnasium.
The Bison earned 15 team points to finish in front of Keystone College (14 points), Hudson Valley Community College (9), Valley Forge Military Academy College (5.5) and Lehigh University (0 points). Gallaudet was a half point behind Yale University (15.5). Gloucester Community College won the invitational with 100 points.
Senior heavyweight Benjamin Bottoms (Chesterfield, Va.) won the Pinner Award with three falls in a total time of 4:51. Bottoms finished third in the 285-pound level after he pinned Williamson's Paulino DeJesus in 1:08 in the third-place bout.
Sophomore Chris Cassel (St. Augustine, Fla.) posted a 1-2 record at the 157-pound level as he earned a win against Yale's Ethan Carlson, who retired due to injury. Cassel then finished his day with a bout against Slippery Rock's Derek Hays where he lost 9-0.
Junior Shannon Callahan (Shady Grove, Md.) lost his first bout at the 184-pound level to Wagner's Peter Morano by fall in 1:03. Callahan bounced back with a 7-4 win over David Doll from Williamson before he ended his day with a loss to Lafayette's Julian Gulbinski, who won by fall in 1:45.
Gallaudet canceled its February 6 meet and will next compete at home on Sunday, February 21, when the Bison welcome University of Delaware, Longwood University and Virginia Tech University club wrestling teams to the Field House.
