Bison compete at Retriever Duals

BALTIMORE - A limited Gallaudet University wrestling club team went to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) campus last Saturday to compete in the Retriever Duals held in Baltimore. GU was swept in its three dual matches as the Bison only had three wrestlers suit up.
The Bison started the day with a 60-4 loss to the host UMBC as Chris Cassel recorded the lone points for the Buff and Blue. The 149-pounder Cassel won by a 16-6 decision over UMBC's Daniel Carr. Shannon Callahan (184) and Ben Bottoms (heavyweight) lost by fall in a few minutes of action.
Gallaudet then had the tough task of facing defending National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) national champion the Apprentice School. The Bison were shutout 66-0. Cassel (149) gave Apprentice's Will Sexton a strong test as it took Sexton nearly six minutes to beat Cassel. Callahan (184) and Bottoms (HWT) suffered falls against the Shipbuilders.
The final match for Gallaudet was against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) as the Bison lost 45-6. Callahan (184) came through with a six-point win as he beat Michael Morabito in 1:55. Cassel lost a 3-1 decision to 149-pounder Matthew White. Bottoms (HWT) lost by fall after putting up over a four-minute bout with Brian Jennings.
Gallaudet is now 0-3 in duals for the 2009-10 season. The Bison will next participate in the Ursinus College Tri-Meet on Thursday, January 21, 2010, in Collegeville, Pa.
