Bison tripped up by Mary Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University women's soccer team dropped a 9-1 decision to University of Mary Washington on a picturesque Sunday afternoon at Hotchkiss Field between the two Capital Athletic Conference foes.

The Bison (3-4-1, 0-2-0 CAC) hung tough with the Eagles in the first half as GU tied the game at one, 25 minutes in. Freshman Shaquana McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.) blasted a 30-yard direct kick into the upper left corner over the head of UMW goalie Tina Brehm (zero saves). The goal was the first in McDonough's collegiate career.

Mary Washington (7-1-2, 2-0-1 CAC) regained the lead minutes later and never looked back. Freshman forward Katy Generelli scored the first of her game-high three goals right before halftime as the Eagles led 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, UMW poured it on as Generelli and defender Amy Olson scored two goals apiece to lead the Eagles to six additional goals in the eight-goal win. Olson, a starter, scored her eighth goal of the season in the 78th minute of the game.

Gallaudet freshman goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) made a season-high 19 saves in 72 minutes of action. Junior goalie Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.) played the final 18 minutes where she made three saves and allowed two goals.

UMW outshot Gallaudet 45-8 and took four corner kicks while the Bison had one.

The loss marked only the second loss at home this season for the Bison, who after six consecutive games at home are now 3-2-1. GU will travel to Towson, Md., on Tuesday, September 29, to face Goucher College in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
