WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University gave up an early goal to start Wednesday's women's soccer game at Hotchkiss Field against non-conference opponent Eastern Mennonite University and was forced into a very defensive game where they came up short, 2-0.
The Royals (2-0) featured a well-balanced attack with nine different players recording shots on goal. Junior midfielder Nora Osei led the Royals as she scored twice off of nine shot attempts (four on goal) for her first two goals of the season.
The Bison (0-2-1) fell behind early as Osei converted off a corner-kick from sophomore midfielder Morgan Hill into the left side of the net in the 10th minute. Senior goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) saved a season-high 16 shots in the game and played solid as the Royals took 35 total shots (18 on goal). Despite the consistent Eastern Mennonite offensive attack, GU senior defender Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) smothered Royal players all night and was able to deflect multiple shots. Junior midfielder Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) played very aggressively as she disrupted multiple offensive charges by Eastern Mennonite.
Gallaudet will look to gain its first victory of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m., when they open North Eastern Athletic Conference play against Lancaster Bible College (0-1) at Hotchkiss Field.
