WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's soccer team battled through rain and humidity Thursday night at Hotchkiss Field but after a scoreless first half the Bison lost 2-0 to Notre Dame of Maryland University.
Gallaudet (0-4-1) played a strong defensive game against Notre Dame (2-2) as the Gators maintained possession for most of the night. Gallaudet senior goalkeeper Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) led the defense with 16 saves while two Bison defenders helped to make two team saves.
The Gators took the lead in the 68th minute as senior midfielder Laura Kauffman scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick. Notre Dame secured the win when junior midfielder Aquillina Faginas scored her first goal of the season with a shot into the left side of the net in the 86th minute off an assist from Kit Talbott.
The Gators showed their offensive strength by taking 29 shots, 20 of which were on goal, while the Bison registered three shots in the game. Notre Dame sophomore forward Chrisline Kimball led the Gators with eight shots on goal. Notre Dame held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Bison heated up near the end of the first half as junior midfielder Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) outran the Gator defense and created three scoring opportunities before halftime. Lindevall had one shot on goal in the 25th minute. Senior defender Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) was the only other Gallaudet player to take a shot on goal.
The Bison will wrap-up their six-game homestand to start the season on Saturday, Sept. 14, with a 2 p.m. North Eastern Athletic Conference game against Penn St.-Abington on Hoy Field.
