Gallaudet nets eight goals as Bison shut out St. Elizabeth

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's soccer team won its first game of the season shutting out North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Saint Elizabeth, 8-0, at Hotchkiss Field on Saturday afternoon.

Gallaudet (1-10-1, 1-5 NEAC) jumped out early on the Eagles (0-10, 0-5 NEAC) when junior Kelsey Koenigs (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) got the Bison on the scoreboard with a goal off an assist from senior Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) in the 12th minute. Senior Monique Balcarcel (Lansing, Mich.) netted the second goal for the Bison, just 47 seconds later. Balcarcel knocked in the ball, which rebounded off St. Elizabeth freshman goalkeeper Grace Bailey (five saves). GU scored the next three goals in a three-minute span from the 33rd to 36th minute. Freshman Danielle Seiss (Poway, Calif.) scored an unassisted goal followed by Giles' first goal of three and junior Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) capped the quick goal run with her first goal of two off an assist from freshman Lori Eldred (Elkhorn, Wis.). Giles scored her second goal with nine seconds before halftime as GU took a 6-0 lead into halftime.

Gallaudet scored twice more in the second half as Giles and Lindevall scored unassisted goals in the 51st and 68th minutes, respectively. The Bison were able to celebrate their win with head coach Sarah Gumina, who's birthday was today.

Freshman Jennifer Livengood (Jacksonville, Fla.) had one save for the Bison as she earned her first collegiate win at Gallaudet.

Gallaudet will look for its second win on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 4:30 p.m. when the Bison travel to Trinity (D.C.) Washington University.
