WASHINGTON – In her debut as Gallaudet University's new women's soccer head coach Liza Offreda and her team celebrated a 2-1 victory over non-conference foe Trinity Washington University on Friday afternoon at Hotchkiss Field. This is the first season opener win for the Bison since 2010 when they beat Washington Adventist University, 3-0.
Gallaudet (1-0) and Trinity (0-1) were in a tight battle throughout the first half as the Bison attack got nine shots off as both teams went into halftime scoreless.
Junior midfielder Megan Calik (Conyers, Ga.) got the Bison on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute as she ripped a shot just to the right of Trinity goalie Eboni Hibbert (five saves). Senior Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) assisted Calik on the goal.
The second goal for the Bison came eight minutes later as freshman Anastasia Murray (Raleigh, N.C.) received a perfect pass from Lindevall (two assists) and scored on the fast break opportunity in the 61st minute.
Trinity struck back with its first goal of the 2014 season when Asya Tucker blasted a 30-yard goal past Bison goalie Jennifer Livengood (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the 77th minute.
GU will next travel to Randolph College (1-0) on Sunday, Aug. 31, for a non-conference 2 p.m. game.
