BALTIMORE - The Gallaudet University women's soccer team fell to Notre Dame of Maryland University, 5-1, Friday evening in their season opener here at Alumnae Field.
Freshman goalie Silvya Levesque (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) made her college debut and recorded 21 saves for the Bison. Levesque faced 26 shots on goal as Notre Dame tallied 33 shots in the game.
Notre Dame (Md.) opened with a strong first half as it scored four times, the first two came off the foot of Jessie Lindenkohl. The Gators (1-0) added two more scores in the final five minutes before halftime. Levesque made 12 saves in the opening 45 minutes.
At the half the Bison (0-1) were able to regroup. Gallaudet's back line held strong until the 81st minute when Lyndsay Rehak scored for the Gators.
Down five the Bison never quit.
Sophomore Stephanie Bettencourt (Mississauga, Ontario) was able to put Gallaudet on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season in the 87th minute.
- Bettencourt scored her third career goal
- Katie Benz (Ottawa, Ontario) made her 25th consecutive start for the Bison
- Gallaudet took four corner kicks
The Bison look to avenge last year's overtime loss when they return home to host Wilson College on Saturday, Sept. 10, at noon at Hoy Field. This will be the conference opener for the Bison.
