COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University women's swimming team lost its North Eastern Conference (NEAC) opener here Saturday afternoon when they lost to Wells College and SUNY Cobleskill in a double dual meet. The Bison fell to Wells 61-34 and was beaten by Cobleskill, 54-41.
The Bison were led by sophomore Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) who finished first in all three of her races. The reigning NEAC Swimmer of the Year edged out Cobleskill's Rachael Degnan in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.66 as Degnan came in at 1:05.97 in the sophomore swimmer's closest race of the afternoon. She also won the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley with times of 1:15.91 and 2:25.05, respectively, as she finished ahead of the next closest swimmer by more than five seconds in each race.
The Bison also benefited from strong performances from their relay teams as both the 200 freestyle relay team and the 200 medley relay team turned in second place finishes. Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.), Emily Harrison (Brewster, Mass.), Brittany Turner (Palmdale, Calif.) and Bree Stroud-Williams (Tucker, Ga.) turned in a time of 2:05.38 in the 200 freestyle relay and finished just four seconds behind the top team. In the meet's first race, Turner, Valerie Farr (Fremont, Calif.), Paige Foreman (Albuquerque, N.M.), and Liv Polzin (Frederick, Md.) secured a second place finish with a time of 2:26.44.
Wells defeated Cobleskill 53-42 in the afternoon's other matchup. Wells won five events on the day while Cobleskill and the Bison each won three.
Gallaudet travels to York (Pa.) College on Friday, Dec. 7, for a non-conference double dual meet against Penn St.-Altoona and the host Spartans.
