WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women’s swimming team closed out its regular-season schedule on Wednesday night at the Field House pool with a 131-108 loss against Notre Dame of Maryland University. The visiting Gators (4-3) won 11 of the 14 events against the Bison (1-11).
The meet was the final one for three seniors on Gallaudet’s roster. The trio of Jennifer Hagerty (West Chester, Pa.), Emily Harrison (Brewster, Mass.) and Brittany Turner (Palmdale, Calif.) swam together in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Turner placed second with a time of 15:16.17 and was followed by Harrison (15:43.68) and Hagerty (18:06.36). Turner and Harrison later swam in the 500 free where they finished third (7:24.16) and fourth (7:59.94) overall, respectively. Turner was fourth in the 50 free (32.59 seconds) and Harrison was fifth in the 100 free (1:22.51). The trio closed out their home careers in the final event of the night in the 400 free relay. Turner’s team of four took first place with a time of 4:51.00 while Harrison and Hagerty’s team placed second (5:43.72). Notre Dame (4-3) swam the final two events as exhibitions since the win was secured.
Gallaudet sophomore Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) won the 200 IM (2:24.07) and the 200 butterfly (2:31.04) and placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:28.86) and the 200 medley relay (2:12.56).
Junior Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) and freshman Liv Polzin (Frederick, Md.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 50 free as Giles touched the wall in 30.08 seconds with Polzin right behind at 30.54. The two followed that with a close finish in the 100 free. Giles was third (1:08.4) with Polzin close behind in fourth (1:10.16). Giles claimed a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.83) while junior Valerie Farr (Fremont, Calif.) was second at 1:22.83. Farr later finished third in the 200 breaststroke (3:00.40).
Freshman Paige Forman (Albuquerque, N.M.) was second in the 200 free as she finished with a time of 2:37.19 followed by freshman Marla Rabenstein (Altoona, Pa.) in third place (3:37.43). Freshman Brianna Stroud-Williams (Tucker, Ga.) finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:17.87) just over two seconds shy of taking second place. Junior Lisa van der Mark (Mijnsheerenland, The Netherlands) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (4:14.97) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:53.90).
GU is off until the 2013 North Eastern Athletic Conference championships that will be held Feb. 15-17 in Cobleskill, N.Y. The Bison finished third overall last year.
