WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet men’s and women’s swimming and diving program is recruiting divers, of all abilities, for the 2013-14 season. GU swim head coach Larry Curran is seeking anyone that has experience in gymnastics, trampoline, yoga, dancing, other athletic activity or just a strong interest in becoming a diver competiting at the NCAA Division III level.
Sophomore Neal Matthews, an accomplished cross country runner for GU, joined the swim program last year with no experience in diving but learned and mastered a full list of dives in a short period of time. Matthews went on to place second overall at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships in Cobleskill, N.Y.
Gallaudet diving coach Jesse Fonner, enters his second year running the Bison diving program that he introduced last year. Fonner, an accomplished NCAA Division I diver at Stanford University, is deaf and proficient in American Sign Language and cued speech. He competed extensively on the national and international circuit for many years and is eager to share his passion for diving with Gallaudet students.
The goal this season is for Matthews and several other Bison divers to represent Gallaudet at the NEAC championships at Cazenovia College. GU had no female divers last season but hope to change that number this season.
Gallaudet’s dive team practices Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays at 7:30-10:30 p.m. Additional team practices may be added if warranted. Dual meets against other colleges and universities begin in October and culminate with the NEAC championships in mid-February.
Anyone interested in diving should attend the swimming and diving team kick-off meeting on Monday, Aug. 26, at 5-6 p.m. in the Field House – Room G41. Coach Fonner can be contacted at [email protected] or via text at 301.875.5939.
