CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University men's and women's swimming and diving teams prepare to make their marks on the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship this weekend at the Schneeweiss Athletic Complex on the campus of Cazenovia College. The 2014 NEAC championships will run from Friday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 16.
The action will begin with each day's preliminary round sessions, which will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Friday's championship round sessions will then begin at 9 p.m., with Saturday's sessions beginning at 6 p.m. and Sunday's championship round kicking off at 5 p.m. A full schedule of events can be found here.
Admission to the event will be $3 per session, $5 for the day and $12 for the weekend, while children will be admitted for free. The entire event will also be streamed live on Cazenovia's YouTube channel here.
This will mark the second time Cazenovia College has hosted the NEAC Championships since swimming & diving was adopted as a conference sport in 2010. Wells College captured both the men's and women's titles at last year's championships, which were hosted by SUNY Cobleskill.
The GU men’s swimming team, who finished third behind reigning champions Wells College and second-place Cazenovia last season, will look to win their third NEAC championship after being victorious in 2010-11 and 2011-12. The Bison men’s team is led by senior DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.), who had an impressive performance at the 2013 championships, finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke, 200 medley relay and took third in both the 100 backstroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 medley relay.
The women’s team placed fourth overall last year and won the 2011 conference title. The Bison women's team is led by junior Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden), who earned two NEAC women's swimmer student-athlete of the week honors this season, won the 100 butterfly, 200 IM and was on two third-place relays (200, 400 medley) at the 2013 NEAC championships.
"The teams have trained hard, especially during the Winter Break where they returned two weeks early and swam over 10,000 yards everyday during that period. At the end of the break, they participated in a couple of swim meets and while they were really tired, each team won at least one of their meets," said Gallaudet swimming and diving coach Larry Curran. "Their training has been reduced significantly over the last three weeks as they peaked for championship performance. They go to this meet well rested and ready to perform at their best!"
This is the fifth year the NEAC has sponsored men’s and women’s swimming and diving as a conference sport. Six schools will be competing in the championship meet; Cazenovia College, Wells College, SUNY Cobleskill, Gallaudet for both men's and women's and College of Saint Elizabeth and Cedar Crest College for women's only.
