Bison men's and women's swimming teams improve times against Cazenovia

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University hosted Cazenovia College on Friday night in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) meet. The women were unable to hold off the Wildcats as they lost 130-75, while the men received an 11-0 forfeit by the Cazenovia men's team.

Sophomore Thyra Wood (Great Falls, Mont.) was the only Bison to finish first in a race as she won the 100 yard freestyle in 1:03.32. Despite the rough night for the women's swimming team, six Bison women beat nine of their previous personal best times. Junior Chelsea Newberry (Twin Falls, Idaho) cut 10 seconds off of her 100-yard freestyle time (1:57.93) and 13 seconds off her 50 butterfly time (1:08.49) as she did her part in two relays for the Bison. Shuxu Tian (Tongling, China) cut down six seconds in the 50 freestyle (50.55 seconds). Sophomore Morgane Vincent (Châtenay-Malabry, France) trimmed nine seconds off her best time in the 1,000 freestyle (17:58.63), and two seconds in the 100 breaststroke (1:42.80). Freshman Faye Frez-Albrecht (Canton, Conn.) cut four seconds off her 100 backstroke time (2:11.25) and an impressive 21 seconds off her 200 freestyle (3:36.29). Senior Alexandra Camell (Minneapolis, Minn.) set a new personal best in the 100 backstroke (1:32.91) and sophomore Taylor Mickelson (Fargo, N.D.) took eight seconds off her 100 freestyle time (1:22.85).

Although the Bison men's swimming team did not compete against Cazenovia, seven swimmers also improved on their best times. Junior Abdiel Davila-Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore David Bruno (Patchogue, N.Y.) cut eight and nine seconds, respectively, off their 200 freestyle times, 2:11.51 and 3:08.94. Davila-Cruz also trimmed three seconds off his best time in the 100 butterfly (1:02.33). Four swimmers set new personal bests in the 100 yard freestyle; Nathan Parkin (Elgin, Ill.) with a time of 1:10.22, Matthijs Wubbolts (Groningen, Netherlands) with a time of 53.13, Xuan Lin (Fulton, Ill.) with a time of 1:14.42 and Seth Washington (Frederick, Md.) with a time of 1:04.59. Lin also cut four seconds off his 200 breaststroke (3:13.75) and Washington cut five seconds off his 100 backstroke (1:19.43). Junior Tony Abshire (Sacramento, Calif.) cut time from two of his personal records, an impressive 35 seconds off his best time in the 1,000 freestyle (17:14.05) and nine seconds off in the 500 freestyle (8:17.74).

The Bison men's and women's swimming teams will compete at Greensboro College on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m.
