GU women's swimming team wins and men's team hangs tough in season home opener

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's and women's swimming and diving teams held their first meet of the season on Saturday against Ferrum College. The women's team won 97-95 while the men's team fell by eight points, 94-86.

Gallaudet's men's team (0-1) won three of the 11 events they participated in. Senior Matthijis Wubbolts (Groningen, Netherlands) took first place in the three events GU won as he was first to the wall in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.49 seconds, 100 freestyle (54.31) and the 100 breaststroke (1:12.02).

The Bison women's team (1-0) won four of the 11 events against Ferrum led by senior Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden). Polivanchuk finished finished first in all three of her individual events; the 50 yard freestyle (25.22), 100 freestyle (55.82) and 100 backstroke (1:01.81) to collect 27 team points. The Bison also took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:32.39.

Gallaudet will next host Frostburg State University on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. in the Field House pool.
