Gallaudet women's swimming team dives into a new season at Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The 2015-16 season got underway for the Gallaudet University women's swimming and diving program here Saturday as the Bison competed in a double dual meet. The Bison were swept in their two meets; 201-59 to Frostburg State University and 176-77 to Davis & Elkins College. 

Freshman Jana Kiefer (Leander, Texas) was third in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:33.50, 20 seconds off the first-place time. Kiefer later took fifth in the 100 backstroke with an identical time of 1:33.50.

Seniors Katie Bigelow (Flushing, Mich.) and Brianna Stroud-Williams (Tucker, Ga.) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 50 backstroke with times of 41.60 and 41.67. Bigelow was sixth in the 50 butterfly (46.01).

Stroud-Williams placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:51.91) and was seventh in the 800 freestyle as she touched the wall in 12:29.07.

Sophomore Elizabeth Sadler (Rochester, N.Y.) was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:58.74) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:22.68).

Sophomore Kylie Sterling (Sumner, Wash.) was fifth in the 50 breaststroke (49.20) followed by Paige-Cecily Ramos (New York, N.Y.) in sixth place (49.51). Sterling was also fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:48.57) while Ramos was sixth in the 100 IM with a time of 1:40.22.

GU's 200 meter freestyle relay team of Sterling, senior Paige Foreman (Albuquerque, N.M.), freshman Alyssa Hanbury (Orlando, Fla.) and Stroud-Williams was third with a time of 2:33.35. The Bison 200 medley relay team of Bigelow, Ramos, Hanbury and Kiefer finished third overall with a time of 2:49.76, 33 seconds off the top relay team.

A young Bison squad showed improvement from a month ago, when training started, and has room to grow and refine its skills as the season continues.

The Bison will begin North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) competition on Friday, Oct. 30, in New York as they go up against Cazenovia College.
