Gallaudet women's team finishes fifth at 2017 NEAC championships

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The third and final day of the 2017 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) swimming and diving championships came to an end here Sunday night at the Schneeweiss Athletic Complex on the campus of Cazenovia College. Gallaudet University's women's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place overall as the the hosts and defending conference champion Cazenovia celebrated a third consecutive title.

Gallaudet finished the three-day meet with 269 points after 20 events. The Wildcats posted a commanding win for the championship with 703 points. Cedar Crest College took second place with 463 points while SUNY Cobleskill took third (324) and Wells took fourth (311).

Freshman Jackie Perkins (Hampton, Va.) and junior Jana Kiefer (Leander, Texas) were two of the top finishers for the Bison on Sunday. 

Perkins placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:56.59 earning 10 points for the Bison in the meet.

Perkins was later joined by freshman Julia Miller-Notestone (Medford, Ore.), freshman Jessica Monroe (Newnan, Ga.) and junior Katie Bigelow (Flushing, Mich.) for the 400 freestyle. The team combined for 20 points and a fifth place finish with a combined time of 4:31.10

Kiefer also earned 10 points when she placed fifth in the 200 butterfly as she touched the wall in 3:09.79. Finishing just behind her was senior Paige-Cecily Ramos (New York, N.Y.) who touched the wall in 3:20.38 for a sixth-place finish and nine points.

Kiefer placed seventh in the 200 backstroke earning seven more points for the Bison with a final time of 2:57.69.

BISON TRACKS

  • Miller-Notestone took sixth place and nine points for the Bison in the 100 Individual Medley (1:11.75)
  • In the 1,650 freestyle, Bigelow placed ninth (24:27.17) and Monroe placed 10th (24:35.75)
  • Sophmore Alyssa Hanbury (Orlando, Fla.) took eighth place in the 200 backstroke with a final time of 3:04.44
  • Senior Taylor Mickelson (Fargo, N.D.), Hanbury, Kiefer and Ramos combined for a ninth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay finishing the event in 4:57.39

SENIORS
This was the final collegiate swim meet for Gallaudet's seniors; Mickelson, Ramos and Naomi Schofield (Syracuse, N.Y.).
