GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its conference student-athlete of the week awards for the week of Nov. 15 and Gallaudet University swept the honors. Freshman Julia Miller-Notestone (Medford Ore.) was honored as the NEAC Women's Swimmer of the Week and freshman Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) was honored as the NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Week for a second consecutive week.
Miller-Notestone led the Bison to a double-dual meet victory over both Ferrum College and host Hollins University after recording three victories last Saturday. Individually, Miller-Notestone won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:14.21, which topped the rest of the seven-swimmer field by over four seconds. She also won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.26, again besting the seven-swimmer field by at least three seconds. Miller-Notestone started the day helping lead off the 200 medley relay team, joining freshmen Jackie Perkins (Hampton, Va.) and Jessica Monroe (Newnan, Ga.) and junior Jana Kiefer (Leander, Texas) to capture first place out of four teams with a time of 2:14.90. The performance helped the Bison defeat Ferrum 98-80 and Hollins 98-94.
Martinez had another tremendous performance for the Bison as he helped Gallaudet defeat Ferrum College, 91-59. The freshman took first place in three individual events starting with the 400-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 4:40.59. He also took first place in the 100-yard freestyle (0:55.85) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.59).
This is Gallaudet women's swimming and diving's first NEAC Swimmer of the Week honor this season and Miller-Notestone's first career NEAC award.
The Bison will begin North Eastern Athletic Conference competition next Saturday, Nov. 19, in a double dual meet against Cazenovia College and host Cedar Crest College at 3 p.m.
