GU women's swimming begin new year with 110-70 victory

WASHINGTON - It was a solid victory for the Gallaudet University women's swimming and diving here Friday night as the Bison defeated Penn St.-Altoona, 110-70, in a non-conference meet in the Field House pool.

Gallaudet (4-5) took home first in six events led by sophomore Jackie Perkins (Hampton, Va.), who won two events. She began her night with a win in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.49 seconds. She was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.85) and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:07.44) behind junior teammate Alisia Metante (Pleasanton, Calif.), who set a new personal record time of 1:04.73. Metante was second to Perkins in the 50-yard freestyle with a close time of 30.11 seconds.

GU swept two events as junior Alyssa Hanbury (Orlando, Fla.) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:24.04) as she out-touched fellow junior Jana Kiefer (Leander, Texas), who finished in 1:24.10. Sophomore Jessica Monroe (Senoia, Ga.) was first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (14:22.72) while senior Faye Frez-Albrecht (Canton, Conn.) was second with a new personal best time of 16:10.39.

Monroe was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:22.01) followed by Kiefer in third (1:24.67). Monroe was also second in the 500-yard freestyle (6:55.40) while Metante was third (7:20.68).

  • GU's 200-yard medley relay finished first with a time of 3:07.23
  • The Bison 200-yard freestyle relay was second (2:36.28)
  • Penn St.-Altoona (3-5) won five events
  • Hanbury was third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:47.42)
  • Kiefer was third in the 200-yard IM (3:00.74)
  • There were no diving events
  • This is the second straight year the Bison women's team has won four meets in a season

Gallaudet will host Bridgewater (Va.) College (6-1) tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 13) in a non-conference meet at 1 p.m. This is Senior Day for the Bison seniors as the GU program will recognize its seniors during the meet.
