YORK, Pa. – The Gallaudet University women’s swimming team split a double dual meet on Friday night at York (Pa.) College. The Bison defeated Penn St.-Altoona 122-66 but fell to the host Spartans 127-70.
The meet was dominated by the Spartans but the Bison had several individuals finish in the top five of their events. Sophomore Valerie Farr (Fremont, Calif.) was third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:21.85 followed by junior Tong Song (Beijing, China) at 1:21.90 in fourth. Tandy Lewis (Frederick, Md.) was fifth in the 50 freestyle (29.41 seconds) and sixth in the 100 free (1:11.11). Sophomore Alyssa Gleason (Springfield, Va.) was fifth in the 200 free (2:36.69) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:26.35) as she edged junior Brittany Turner (Palmdale, Calif.) by three-tenths of a second. Turner placed fourth in the 1,000 free (14:49.09) in her other event.
York had both wins in hand and swam the final two events as exhibitions as the Bison went up against Penn St.-Altoona, by doing so GU took home some high finishes. The Bison swept the team points in the 500 free as senior Kinna Franklin was first with a time of 8:36.57. Fellow senior Jenn Hagerty (West Chester, Pa.) followed in second with sophomore Tiffany Putt (Huntingdon, Pa.) in third.
Gallaudet was second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:37.44. The team consisted of Morgan Eastman (Tallahassee, Fla.), Franklin, freshman Carol Lynn (Gardner, Kan.) and Emily Harrison.
GU is now off until the New Year and will next get in the pool on Saturday, January 21, in the final regular-season meet for the Bison at home against Hood College at 1 p.m.
