Gallaudet improves against Goucher as Polivanchuk finishes first twice
TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) won two events and placed second in one event to lead the Gallaudet University women’s swimming team here Saturday in a non-conference meet against Goucher College. The host Gophers won 124-73 but the Bison showed improvement compared to last year’s 78-11 loss to Goucher.
Polivanchuk was first in the 100-yard backstroke when she finished 1:05.83, just over six seconds ahead of Goucher’s Abigail Wegman (1:12.43). She followed that up with a win in the 100 breaststroke as she beat out Goucher’s Nicole Craver by a second, 1:13.11 to 1:14.19. Polivanchuk was out touched by Craver in the 200 IM when she finished with a time of 2:19.12 compared to Polivanchuk’s time of 2:19.79. The Bison sophomore finished with 22 of Gallaudet’s 73 team points.
Senior Brittany Turner (Palmdale, Calif.) had two third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:32.09) and the 100 butterfly (1:27.97). Junior Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:06.74), eight seconds off first place, and finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.73) behind Polivanchuk.
Several Bison swimmers continued to lower their personal best times including freshman Brianna Stroud-Williams (Tucker, Ga.), Liv Polzin (Frederick, Md.) and Paige Foreman (Albuquerque, N.M.). Stroud-Williams dropped over 12 seconds off her time in the 1,000 freestyle (13:57.48) and the 500 freestyle (6:42.45). Polzin shaved two seconds off her times in the 50 free (30.24 seconds), two seconds off the first-place finish, and the 100 free (1:07.69), just behind Giles. Foreman improved her time in the 200 IM by seven seconds with a time of 3:06.34 and she was five seconds faster in the 100 butterfly (1:41.86).
Gallaudet will next swim on Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. in Cobleskill, N.Y., to take on North Eastern Athletic Conference foes Wells College and SUNY Cobleskill in the conference opener for the Bison.
