BALTIMORE – The Gallaudet University women’s track and field team battled the elements on Saturday as the Bison participated in the Johns Hopkins-Loyola Invitational at the Loyola University Track Complex. The Bison competed through the rain showers that peppered the Baltimore region throughout the day, which forced the invitational to only finish 16 events.
Gallaudet participated in seven of the 16 events as the Bison went up against several Division I schools in the U.S. Naval Academy, Rider University and the host Greyhounds of Loyola along with other Division III programs.
Sophomore thrower Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) finished fourth overall in the shot put as she threw the shot 10.32 meters. Navy’s Janet VonEiff won the shot put with a toss of 11.26 meters, which was three feet more than Israel’s toss.
The Bison 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.), sophomores Maddie Morgan (Hockessin, Del.) and Maggie Hoyt (Edgecomb, Maine) and senior Brittainy Payne (Pine Hill, N.J.) finished seventh overall (58.94 seconds). GU was just seven seconds behind first-place Navy.
Gallaudet had six runners finish the 100-meter dash led by freshman Leslye Kang (N.J.) who crossed the finish line ninth overall in 14.77 seconds. Kang was closely followed by Payne (10th place, 14.96 seconds), Morgan (12th, 15.10), Weiss (13th, 15.35), Rosemary Johnson (Richardson, Texas) was 14th overall (15.66) and Hoyt (15th, 16.47).
Weiss was the first Bison to finish the 400-meter dash in 1:14.52 while teammate Taryn Philippi (St. Cloud, Minn.) was two spots behind as she finished in 1:16.11. Philippi was 22nd in the 500-meter dash (2:54.30) while freshman Radoslava Slavavo (Scranton, Pa.) was 24th (3:11.78). Slavavo was the only Bison in the 1,500-meter run as she crossed the finish line 27th overall (6:47.43). Morgan closed out the events for the Bison as she finished 16th in the 200-meter dash (31.81 seconds).
The Gallaudet track and field program is off for two weeks as the Bison will next compete at the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Championships on Friday, April 29, at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
