SALISBURY, Md. – The 2012 season for the Gallaudet University women’s track and field team got underway Saturday at the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet hosted by Salisbury University on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Bison finished sixth out of nine teams in the opening outdoor meet.
Gallaudet accumulated 29 team points as the Bison finished ahead of Johns Hopkins University (24), who had three participants at the meet, Salisbury University Alumni (22) and Middlesex Community College (six points). The host Sea Gulls from Salisbury University won the meet with 216 points followed by Hood College (124), Coppin State University (113), Shenandoah University (107) and Gloucester County (34).
Sophomore Leslye Kang (Wayne, N.J.) won the javelin event with a toss of 33.34 meters to secure 10 team points for the Bison. Kang also picked up a point in the 100 meter dash (14.68 seconds). Freshman Harmony Brunson (Monrovia, Md.) was just ahead of Kang in the 100 meter dash (14.59). Brunson was eighth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.57).
Freshman Lindsey Corthell (Orlando, Fla.) had a great debut for the Bison as she finished fourth in the 800 meter run (2:38.68), fifth in the 400 meter dash (1:05.45) and seventh in the 1,500 meter run (5:17.04). Sophomore Shadoe Williamson (Austin, Texas) was seventh in the 400 and 800 meter events with times of 1:07.91 and 2:49.73, respectively.
The Bison are off for Spring Break and will next compete on Saturday, March 24, in Bridgewater, Va., at the Dr. Harry GM Jopson Invite on the campus of Bridgewater College.
