WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's track and field team won its own invitational on a picture perfect spring Saturday at Thomas O. Berg Track. The Bison defeated Montgomery College, 45-18, in the first home meet of the season.
The Bison kicked off the meet with the field events, sophomore Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) finished first in the high jump (1.42 meters) while senior Lindsey Corthell (Orlando, Fla.) finished first in the javelin throw (21.51 meters). Sophomores Tuesdae Dunklin (Gardendale, Ala.) and Amanda Lopez (New York, N.Y.) got first and second place in the shot put with a distance of 8.90 meters and 8.61 meters, respectively. Sophomore Juliana Apfel (Tucson, Ariz.) and Dunklin also took first and second in the discus throw with tosses of 28.11 and 25.64 meters, respectively. Senior Taylor Adams (Del City, Okla.) took first place in the women's hammer throw with a throw of 30.40 meters as Lopez took second with a top throw of 24.39 meters.
The Bison also did well in the running events that took place throughout the afternoon. Corthell earned two more first-place finishes in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:29.17 and was part of the 4x400 meter relay along with junior LaQuita Carroll (Spanish Fort, Ala.), sophomore Lawjen Ashmore (Fairbanks, Alaska) and junior Shellane McKitty (Yonkers, N.Y.) that won with a time of 4:29.61. Sophomore Ivy Sahneyah (First Mesa, Ariz.) took first in the women's 5,000-meter run (26:55.45) and third in the 1,500-meter run (7:17.43).
Sophomore Kori Koss (Green Bay, Wis.), McKitty, Ashmore and Carroll took first place in the women's 4x100-meter relay (54.05 seconds). Koss also took second place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:16.55) while Ashmore, Carroll and McKitty grabbed first, second, and third places, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Senior Kevlasha Humphrey (Jacksonville, Ill.) took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:26.19.

- Senior Megan Calik (Conyers, Ga.) finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 19.45 meters
- GU took second place in the 4x100-meter relay (59.93 seconds) with the team of Apfel, Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.), Melissa Mischo (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Shysh
- This the first time this season the women's track and field team has finished in first place
GU will travel to Frostburg State University to compete in the Bobcat invitational next Saturday, April 2, at 10:30 a.m.
