Bison volleyball brings home a 3-1 weekend

GETTYSBURG, PA--The volleyball team finished 3-1 with wins over Eastern, Frostburg and Scranton. The sole loss was against the host Gettysburg Bullets. In a tournament of 18 teams, the Bison finished tied for third, along with Johns Hopkins, Messiah, and Virginia Wesleyan.

Junior middle hitters Katelyn Reese and Ludmila Mounty-Weinstock spat out double-digit kills in three of the four matches played. Reese opened with 18 in the game against Eastern, while Mounty-Weinstock notched 15. Sophomore Justine Jeter also put out 12, but fellow sophomore Amanda Krieger had top honors, with 19 bullets from the outside hitter position. Krieger also had double-digit kills in three of four matches.

Against Frostburg, Mounty-Weinstock jumped ahead with 17 kills, while Reese and Krieger posted 15 and 10, respectively. The Bison kills machine took a breather against Gettysburg, only posting 32 kills altogether, after posting 67 and 62 in the first two games.

In the Scranton match, the machine came back to life, posting a team-high 69 kills, with Krieger and Mounty-Weinstock dishing out 14 apiece. Reese outdid her teammates, posting 15 to take top kill honors. Junior Ursa Rewolinski unleashed 9 of her Rewolinski Rockets as the Bison dispatched Scranton three games to one.

Despite the weekend's total of 230 kills, the driving factor behind these kills were the precisely targeted sets of co-captain Krystle Berrigan. She had a total of 204 assists that helped set up the kills.  Defensively, Berrigan's fellow captain-mate, Shana Lehmann posted 93 digs as a libero, averaging 5.8 per game, good to secure an All-Tournament selection (her highest output was 33 against Eastern).

Lehmann's tap brings it to two straight weeks that a Bison has finished in the all-tournament team. At last week's Juniata College tournament, Katelyn Reese had the honors.

The Bison (4-4) travel to take on Villa Julie College in the conference opener on Wednesday, September 12 before continuing on to the weekend's Washington & Lee tri-meet.
