Three Bison earn All-CAC volleyball honors, Lehmann named to 1st team

YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its 2009 all-conference volleyball team on Tuesday and Gallaudet University had three players earn a spot on the first or second teams. Senior libero Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) was the only Bison named to the first team. Fellow senior outside hitters Justine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) and Amanda Krieger (Carmel, Ind.) were selected to the second team. The trio helped Gallaudet to a 24-14 record this season as the Bison reached the CAC championship match.

The trio had a late start to their final collegiate season as they participated in the 2009 Deaflympics as members of Team USA. They helped the USA win the silver medal before they returned to Washington, D.C., and began the 2009 season here at GU the third week in September. All three players have been named CAC Player of the Week this year, a conference high of three selections.

Lehmann is making her second appearance on the All-CAC first team but for the first time since 2007. Last season, she was sidelined with an injury. Lehmann ranks 13th in the nation in digs per set with 6.32 and leads the CAC and total digs with 722 in 114 sets played. She has also passed out 42 assists and made 27 service aces. Lehmann was recently named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team for the College Division - District 2 and will have a chance to earn Academic All-American honors.

Jeter earns her first-ever All-CAC honor as she was named to the second team. She is ranked 25th in the nation in kills per set with 3.98. Jeter leads the conference and the team in kills with 481 and has made 340 digs in 121 sets played. She has also served up 46 service aces and contributed 33 blocks. She tallied 16 double-doubles this season.

Krieger makes her first appearance on an all-conference team after a terrific senior season. She is the conference leader in service aces with 75 in 119 sets played (0.63 per set). Krieger is also second in the CAC for kills per set (3.51) as she has hammered home 418 for the season and made 335 digs. She accumulated a team best 19 double-doubles this season.

The three All-CAC selections increase Gallaudet's program total to 45 since 1991. Lehmann became the 25th first-team selection for the Bison while Jeter and Krieger added to the second-team total of 20. In fact, Gallaudet has had at least one All-CAC first team selection 16 of the past 19 seasons. This is the last year for Gallaudet in the CAC as the Bison join the North Eastern Athletic Conference next year.

University of Mary Washington swept the CAC Volleyball individual awards as junior Anne Lutkenhaus was named CAC Player of the Year and was selected to her second straight All-CAC first team. UMW freshman Laura Gomez, a second-team selection, was named CAC Rookie of the Year. UMW coach Dee Conway was selected by her peers as CAC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career and the first since 1991.

Gallaudet is the No. 2 seed in the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Volleyball Championship that will begin with the first round tomorrow night (Wednesday, November 11) as the Bison host Pittsburgh-Bradford at 8 p.m. in the Field House. The winner will advance to Saturday and play in one of the two semifinal matches, followed by the championship match, at the site of the highest remaining seed.
