Kali Frowick named NEAC Rookie of the Year, four Bison earn all-conference honors
GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its 2011 women's volleyball all-conference selections and Gallaudet University received the maximum four selections as two Bison made the first and second teams, respectively.
Freshman setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) and freshman middle hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) were both named first team all-conference. Frowick was also selected as the first-ever NEAC Rookie of the Year. Junior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) and junior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) were selected to the all-conference second team. With the help of the four All-NEAC honorees Gallaudet was able to finish second in the NEAC standing with an overall record of 26-7 and a conference mark of 9-1 with the lone loss coming against regular-season champion Penn St.-Berks.
Frowick was selected as NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week once this season (September 5) and received two all-tournament honors. Frowick ranks fifth in the conference in hitting percentage (.281) and kills (344), 3.04 per set. Frowick recorded double digit kills in 20 games this season with her season-high coming against St. Mary's (Md.) College on October 4, where she had 20 kills in a 3-2 victory. She posted her season-high hitting percentage on September 29, at McDaniel with a .733 mark and had a percentage over .500 five other matches. Frowick is second on the team in digs (287) and third in blocks (44) and fifth in service aces (44).
Tubert had an outstanding season at setter for the Bison as she led the conference in assists with 1,050 and a 9.29 average per set. Tubert helped the Bison reach a national ranking of 16th in aces per set with 0.57 per set average which placed her fifth on the NEAC conference leaderboard. She leads the Bison with 64 service aces in 33 matches played. Tubert had a season-high of 51 assists against Gettysburg and Allegheny helping the Bison to win both matches. She posted her season-high of eight service aces on October 15, when the Bison defeated Cazenovia 3-0. She also tallied 112 kills and 161 digs this season.
This is Whited's second All-NEAC honor in two seasons, last year she was selected to the first team. She was selected as NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week once this season (October 10). Whited ranks seventh in the NEAC in hitting percentage (.222) while she accumulated 294 kills with a kill per set percentage of 2.67. Whited reached her season-high in kills three times this season with 17 coming against Lebanon Valley, Gettysburg, and Catholic in three Bison victories. Her season-high hitting percentage came against Lancaster Bible where she posted a .692 percent. She is also third on the team with 262 digs and fourth in service aces (51).
Israel makes her second consecutive appearance on the all-conference second team. She was selected as the NEAC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week three times this season (September 5, October 10, October 24). Israel ranks first in the conference and 24th in the nation in hitting percentage (.369). She is also the NEAC leader in blocks (122) and an average of 1.15 per set that places her 25th in Division III. She finished third on the team with 198 kills and a 1.87 kill per set percentage. Israel posted her season-high in blocks September 3, vs. Penn St.-Altoona where she had 10 total blocks in a Bison victory.
Penn St.-Berks sophomore Amy Shelton was named NEAC Player of the Year. Shelton was named NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week four times this season and had 336 kills with a hitting percentage of .364. Shelton also registered 78 blocks, 73 digs, and 25 service aces. Shelton's coach, Jessie Franko, was named NEAC Coach of the Year as she led the Lions to the regular-season championship. Keuka senior libero Hannah Doody, a third team all-conference selection, received the first ever NEAC Defensive Player of the Year. She recorded 358 digs with a percentage of 4.26 digs per game, ranking fourth in the conference. Doody was named NEAC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week once this season.
