Bison complete best regular-season under Coach Boren with sweep in Scranton
SCRANTON, Pa. – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team completed their best regular-season under the direction of head coach Lynn Ray Boren when the Bison swept two matches on the road Saturday against Lebanon Valley College and University of Scranton at the Long Center. GU finishes the regular-season with a 26-7 (.787 winning percentage) record as the Bison prepare for the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament.
Gallaudet, ranked No. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic region, saw its 12-match win streak end earlier this week with a tough 3-2 loss against Catholic University of America but bounced back Saturday with back-to-back 3-0 wins.
This is the first time since 2006 the Bison have swept Lebanon Valley and Scranton. The three teams have been playing each other consistently for eight years straight in a tri-match. During the span the Bison are 7-1 against Scranton and 3-5 against the Dutchmen.
The Bison defeated the Dutchmen (20-9) in straight sets 27-25, 25-19, 25-23. Junior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) knocked down 17 kills to go with seven kills. Freshman Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) chipped in nine kills and six digs. Senior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) and junior libero Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) had 11 digs each to lead the Bison. Freshman setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) passed out 33 assists and made seven digs and three blocks in the win.
In the second match the Bison defeated the host Royals (17-15) in straight sets 25-19, 25-14, 25-23. Whited recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs to pace the Bison. Frowick was a kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Junior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) made five blocks up front and tallied four kills. Tubert passed out 25 assists to go with five kills and three blocks in the win.
Scranton won the other match against Lebanon Valley, 3-2, with a 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 8-25, 15-12 victory.
GU best regular-season prior to this year was in 2006 when the Bison went 25-9. Coach Boren is in his seventh season at the helm with Gallaudet.
Gallaudet will enter next week's NEAC tournament being hosted by Penn St.-Berks as the No. 2 seed and will face third-seed SUNYIT in the semifinal round on Saturday, November 5, at 11 a.m. The winner advances to the championship match at 3 p.m.
