GU's Jessica Israel named NEAC Volleyball Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly student-athlete of the week awards for Oct. 1 and Gallaudet University senior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) was named Women's Volleyball Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance at GU's Worthington Classic Tournament last weekend.
The senior middle hitter posted eight solo blocks, six assisted blocks and two digs to help the Bison to a 4-1 record on the week, which included a second place finish at the Worthington Classic. The Bison finished undefeated in pool play (3-0) before they ultimately lost to Messiah College, 3-1, in the tournament championship. Israel provided a ton of offense on the week as well, 56 kills and a .414 attack percentage (56-10-111) to produce 67 points (3.5 p/set) in 19 sets en route to being named to the all-tournament team. The conference award is the second of the season for Israel, who won three of them last season. Israel's second NEAC honor this year gives Gallaudet three total for the season as senior Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) was honored on Sept. 17 and Israel back on Sept. 10.
Kaitlyn Harrington of SUNYIT was the recipient of the NEAC Women's Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week as she led the Wildcats to a 4-2 record with 74 kills, 68 digs, and five blocks on the week.
The Bison (17-5) are back in action Thursday, Oct. 4, night as they travel to the University of Mary Washington in a non-conference matchup. The team then returns home on Friday, Oct. 5, for a conference doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College and Penn St.-Abington. The first match begins at 1 p.m. in the Field House.
