GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly conference student-athlete of the week awards for the week of Sept. 10 and Gallaudet University senior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) was named NEAC Women's Volleyball Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for her dominant performance at the net for the Bison.
She averaged 1.03 blocks per set through eight matches for the Bison, coming up with 17 solo blocks and 15 assisted blocks while guiding Gallaudet to a 6-2 record to begin the season. Israel's standout performance against UMass-Boston nearly led the Bison to an upset of the preseason nationally ranked No. 16 Beacons before ultimately falling in heartbreaking fashion, 3-2. She led all Bison with four block solos and one block assist in the loss.
Penn St.-Abington outside hitter Abby Millan was named NEAC Women's Volleyball Student-Athlete of the week as she racked up 67 kills, 48 digs, 22 serve aces, four assists and 90 points as the Nittany Lions finished the week with a 4-2 record.
Millan beat out Bison outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.), the leading hitter for Gallaudet during its opening two weekends of play in two different tournaments. Over the course of eight matches, the sophomore tallied 98 kills (3.27 kills per set), 72 digs, seven blocks and seven service aces. She had three double-doubles during this past weekend's tournament at the Endicott Invitational in Beverly, Mass.
Israel, Frowick and the rest of the Bison look to continue their strong season when they host Goucher College on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in the home opener at the Field House.
