Gallaudet deflects competition at Battlefield Classic, two players earn all-tournament honors

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – It was a perfect start to the 2012 season for the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team as it picked up two more wins Saturday at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College.
Gallaudet (4-0) defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-1, as it jumped out 25-16, 25-13 before the Bison dropped the third set, 19-25. GU rallied and won the fourth and decisive set 25-18. The Bison turned around and went up against Penn St.-Altoona and won by the same identical 3-1 margin, 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14.
Senior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) and sophomore setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) were named to the all-tournament team. Gallaudet was the only school to have multiple all-tournament selections. GU was one of four schools to finish the weekend with a with a 4-0 record, the others were Adrian, Geneva and Scranton among the 14-team field.
Sophomore Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) had 12 kills and five digs in the win against RIT. Tubert passed out 30 assists and eight digs while freshman Kate Fetzer (Noblesville, Ind.) made a team-high 19 digs.
Senior Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) and Whited had nine kills each in the win against Penn St.-Altoona. Tubert added 39 assists and two service aces while senior Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) had a team-high four service aces in the win.
Gallaudet will head to Beverly, Mass., next week to participate in the Endicott Invitational on Sept. 7-8.
